4 Tips for Mastering Time Management at ECC

Balancing classes, assignments, work, and personal life can be challenging, but with the right time management skills, you can stay on top of your responsibilities while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your time at Elgin Community College.

1. Use a Planner to Prioritize Tasks

Use a planner, calendar app, or a simple notebook to map out your classes, study sessions, work hours, and personal commitments. Does a daily to-do list work best? Weekly? Find the organization that works for you. The MyECC app offers assignment trackers and scheduling tools.

2. Limit Distractions

Find a quiet place to study, turn off notifications on your phone, and use website blockers if needed. Set aside blocks of time for studying and scrolling— none of us are perfect! If you know the mornings are your most productive time, set a time to study first thing. Finding a studying partner can help keep yourself accountable and is a good way to make connections.

3. Take Care of Yourself

Good time management includes self-care. Prioritize sleep, healthy meals, and snacks, and exercise to keep your mind and body functioning at their best. No one performs their best under stress or fueled solely by energy drinks! Take a break, go for a walk, and be ready to start your study session.

4. Use Campus Resources

Take advantage of tutoring services, faculty office hours, the library, and ECC Wellness Services. These resources can provide additional guidance and support. Don’t wait until it's too late to reach out; staying on top of your coursework and understanding the material are critical for success. Your professors have office hours to assist students and provide help.

By implementing these strategies, you’ll be better equipped to manage your time effectively and make the most of your community college experience. Stay organized, stay focused, and remember that balance is key!
