Overview
Are you concerned about the Earth's resource consumption, conservation, and sustainability? Elgin Community College's energy management program focuses on the business of renewable energy. Students gain hands-on experience through expert-led coursework and field-based internships. You’ll learn to evaluate energy management and renewable energy systems in both residential and commercial buildings. The program also covers optimizing current and advanced systems to prepare you for a career as a wind turbine technician. After completing the program, you’ll have the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in your chosen field. You’ll also be well-prepared to take certification exams in your specialty areas.
The curriculum covers various aspects: solar heating, wind energy, solar electricity, and energy auditing. Learn to assess energy management and renewable energy systems in residential and commercial structures. In class, you'll learn techniques to improve building automation systems in homes and businesses while integrating the latest technologies. This program prepares you for different careers, like being a wind turbine technician or getting HVAC certification. It also prepares you for the EPA Section 608 Technician Certification, which legally authorizes you to handle refrigerants and ensures you have the skills and knowledge to handle disposal and environmental protection measures in your community properly. What is Energy Management?
Energy management is the process of monitoring, controlling, optimizing, and conserving energy to minimize adverse effects on the environment. It tracks energy consumption to conserve all forms of usage.
The process of energy management includes:
- Collecting and analyzing continuous data.
- Identify optimal equipment schedules, control points, and usage rates to improve efficiency.
- Calculate return on investments.
- Execute advanced energy solutions.
Energy management is the measure of energy consumption to reduce costs, reduce carbon emissions, and reduce risks.
What will I study for a certificate in Energy Management?
The course of study includes work in solar heating, wind energy, solar electricity, and energy auditing. At ECC, you'll learn to evaluate energy management and renewable energy systems in both residential and commercial buildings. You'll also explore ways to optimize existing building automation systems and integrate new, state-of-the-art technologies. In addition to classroom study, you'll conduct energy audits and system analysis on buildings throughout the Elgin area. Faculty members include veteran teachers and industry professionals.

These career paths span many diverse fields, including manufacturing, engineering, logistics, and land management.
